Ontario further extends the temporary wage increase for Personal Support Workers

Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Personal Support Workers (PSW) and the front line workers have been continuously striving and helping the most vulnerable patients who need emergency support and care for fulfilling their day-to-day chores and needs. To stabilize the staffing level and to support the front-line workers in this need of the hour the Ontario government is investing an additional amount of $169 million. This is the third additional investment by the Ontario government in the last year. Since October 2020 the Ontario government has invested close to $841 for the support of PSWs and frontline workers and with this additional investment of $169, Ontario had invested $1 billion dollars. This investment by the government shows the importance and requirement of Personal Support Workers in the community. Although the increase in the wage of PSWs is temporary and will continue until 31st October 2021 but nevertheless is an important step taken towards the support and financial security of the Personal Support Workers of Ontario.

These additional investments will support and enhance the wage of over 1,58,000 support workers who are providing publicly funded personal support services or direct support services in long-term care, hospitals or community care centres.
The temporary enhanced wage of 1,58,000 Support workers are as follows:

• $3 per hour for around 50,000 eligible workers providing support services in long term care 
• $3 per hour for around 38,000 eligible workers providing support services in-home and community care 
• $3 per hour for around 60,000 eligible workers providing personal direct support services in children, community and social services centres.
• $2 per hour for around 10000 eligible workers working in public hospitals.

“This pay enhancement extension recognizes the important work and substantial sacrifices that personal support workers and direct support workers continue to make to keep Ontarians safe and healthy, including our most vulnerable,” said Treasury Board President Prabmeet Sarkaria.
